Chatham House Senior Research Fellow Program 2025 – Energy Transition and Climate Mitigation

Deadline: July 6, 2025 | Location: London, United Kingdom | Salary: £90,000 per year

Chatham House is now accepting applications for its Senior Research Fellow – Energy Transition and Climate Mitigation role for 2025. This is an exceptional opportunity to join the Environment and Society Centre (ESC) – a hub for impartial, cutting-edge research dedicated to addressing global environmental challenges and shaping a more sustainable future.

The ESC provides evidence-based insights to governments, businesses, and civil society, focusing on the political and economic barriers to effective climate action. It supports regional and international collaboration through policy recommendations and global dialogue.

Chatham House is seeking a Senior Research Fellow to lead a key strategic area of the Centre’s research: energy transition and climate mitigation. This role is ideal for an experienced thought leader with deep knowledge of climate risks, energy systems, and their connections to geopolitics and geoeconomics.

As a central figure in ESC’s leadership team, the successful candidate will help steer the strategic direction of the Centre, ensuring high-quality, impactful research on the global energy transition. Key themes include the geopolitical consequences of moving away from fossil fuels, governance of critical mineral supply chains, and scaling up low-carbon technologies. The Fellow will also collaborate with Chatham House’s Global Economy and Finance team to examine the role of climate finance, including mechanisms such as loss and damage funding, in implementing climate and energy policy.

This is a globally-focused position, working across regions including Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Europe, and North America.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Lead major research initiatives on climate mitigation and energy transition.
  • Shape ESC’s research agenda in collaboration with Chatham House leadership.
  • Produce high-quality analysis to influence global decarbonisation efforts and international policy.
  • Engage with partners and policymakers to promote evidence-based solutions.
  • Drive cooperation across regions and disciplines for a more equitable energy future.

 Benefits

Chatham House offers a highly supportive and intellectually stimulating work environment, with benefits that include:

  • Salary: £90,000 per annum.
  • Generous leave: 37 days annually (including public holidays and Chatham House closure days).
  • Pension scheme, parental leave, employee assistance programme, and flexible working options.
  • Opportunities for career growth, collaboration, and leadership in international policy.

 Eligibility Criteria

Ideal candidates will:

  • Be established leaders in the field of climate policy and low-carbon energy transition.
  • Possess strong expertise in economic and geopolitical analysis, especially within BRICS+ and emerging economies.
  • Have a proven track record of delivering large-scale, high-impact research projects.
  • Be accomplished authors with a strong portfolio of published research.
  • Demonstrate successful fundraising experience from foundations, government agencies, or global institutions.
  • Be skilled in engaging and influencing key decision-makers and policymakers.
  • Show effective leadership in building and managing teams toward strategic goals.
  • Be innovative thinkers, capable of tackling complex challenges and exploring fresh perspectives.
  • Have sound financial knowledge or a willingness to develop this further.
