Call for Experts: WHO Technical Advisory Group on Maternal Mortality 2025

The World Health Organization (WHO) has opened a call for experts to serve on the Technical Advisory Group on Maternal Mortality and Maternal Cause of Death Estimation (TAG). This global advisory group will guide improvements in maternal mortality measurement, strengthen country-level reporting systems, and support the UN Maternal Mortality Estimation Inter-Agency Group (MMEIG) in monitoring progress toward Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.1.1 – reducing the global maternal mortality ratio.

Every year, thousands of women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Reliable and timely maternal mortality data is essential for shaping public health policies, strengthening health systems, and advancing equity in global maternal health. By joining this advisory group, experts will contribute to improving methodologies, enhancing data collection, and supporting evidence-based decision-making that directly saves lives.

Areas of Expertise Sought

WHO invites applications from professionals with proven expertise in:

  • Epidemiology, biostatistics, data science, or health estimation modelling
  • Maternal health, obstetrics, gynecology, midwifery, or reproductive health
  • Health systems monitoring, measurement, and evaluation
  • Civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS), demographic surveillance, maternal death review, verbal autopsy, or mortality data systems

Functions of the Advisory Group

Members of the TAG on Maternal Mortality will:

  1. Provide independent evaluation of scientific and technical aspects of maternal mortality measurement.
  2. Recommend research priorities to address data and measurement challenges.
  3. Strengthen linkages with related advisory groups working on perinatal, neonatal, and infant mortality.
  4. Advise on strategies to improve civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS), ICD coding, and mortality surveillance.
  5. Support dissemination and effective use of maternal mortality estimates at global and country levels.

Membership and Operations

  • Members will serve in a personal capacity, not as representatives of their institutions.
  • Meetings will be held annually (in-person or virtually) at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Additional teleconferences may be scheduled.
  • The working language of the group is English.
